Book Review: No Quarter (Bounty Book 1)

**Note: this was a review from 2016 that got stuck in drafts for some reason.**

Title: No Quarter (Bounty Book 1)

Author: Christine d’Abo
Genre/Age: LGBTQIA, Sci Fi & Fantasy
Publication date: April 25, 2016
How did I get the book: Review ebook copy from Riptide Publishing via NetGalley

Gar is a by-the-rules bounty hunter who’s sent on assignment after Faolan, a space pirate. But the mission isn’t as straightforward of a locate-and-retrieve as Gar expected when a sudden betrayal, and intense passion, has them working together.

My Thoughts

This was my first guy/guy romance and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but No Quarter was a quick (I finished it in 3 hours), fun read with super likable characters.

I wish the fantasy world in which it was set was fleshed out more, I was left with a lot of questions as only the barest of details were given. I felt that it was more of a romance and less of a sci fi/fantasy. Not that romance is bad, I read a lot of it and Gar and Faolan worked as a couple, but it was billed as a sci fi/fantasy and it’s really not.

My other issue is the ending. It’s a book about bounty hunters, pirates, attempted murder and betrayal… and yet, the ending ties everything up in a bow with the happy ending one expects from a romance. It was just too neat and a little too predictable.

But despite my issues with the story, I loved both characters and how they interacted with each other. So sweet! Admittedly I was expecting a bit more heat and a bit less sappy love story but what do I know.

Should you read it?

As long as a guy/guy romance under the guise of sci fi/fantasy doesn’t bother you, it’s a quick, fun read. More sweet and less sexy than I was expecting, it’s a nice beach book – you know, a light read while enjoying a beer (or margarita) in your hammock. Everything gets tied a little too neatly for my liking at the end but both leads are super likable which solves a lot of problems.
